Family Law FAQ

What to expect

What happens during an initial consultation?

Your consultation is a private meeting with Attorney, Kenneth R. Kline, to discuss your situation, your goals, and your options under Ohio law. We’ll listen to your concerns, ask questions to understand the key facts, and explain how the process typically works in cases like yours. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of where you stand and what to expect as to time frame and costs.

Scheduling and cost

How do I schedule a consultation?

Call our office at 614-484-0177, fill out the contact form at www.krkfamilylaw.com, or email amy@krkfamilylaw.com. We’ll ask for some basic information, including the names of the other parties involved, so we can run a conflict check before your appointment. We will also want to know any upcoming hearing dates/deadlines so that we don’t have a scheduling conflict.

Why do you need the other party’s name before we meet?

Ethics rules require us to confirm we don’t already represent, or haven’t previously consulted with, the other person in your matter. This conflict check protects you and ensures we can advocate fully on your behalf.

Is there a fee for the consultation?

Our initial consultation fee is $250.00.

How long does a consultation last?

Most consultations last between one and two hours. Complex matters, such as divorces involving businesses, significant assets, or contested custody, may benefit from a longer appointment.

Can I meet in person or virtually?

We offer consultations in person at our Columbus office, by phone, or by video conference. Choose whatever is most convenient and comfortable for you.

Preparing for your meeting

Is what I say during the consultation confidential?

Yes. Under Ohio’s rules of professional conduct, what you share with us during a consultation is kept confidential, even if you ultimately decide not to hire our firm.

What should I send you?

Please send us all of the information you have that relates to your case. The more time we have to review this information before the conference the better. Helpful items include:

  • Any court papers you’ve received or filed
  • Existing custody orders, separation agreements, or prenuptial agreements
  • Recent pay stubs or tax returns
  • A general list of assets and debts
  • A written list of your questions

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything; we can still have a productive conversation.

What types of matters do you handle?

We handle divorce and dissolution, child custody and parenting time, child support, spousal support, property division, post-decree modifications, adoptions and related family law matters in Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Madison, Fairfield, Fayette, Clark, Clinton, Union, Perry, Pickaway, Ross, Athens, Morrow, Knox, Montgomery, Mahoning and other counties.

Will I get legal advice during the consultation?

We’ll give you general guidance based on the information you share and explain your options/expected costs. Specific strategy and detailed advice typically come after you retain the firm and we’ve reviewed your full situation and documents.

After the consultation

Am I obligated to hire you after the consultation?

No. The consultation is a chance for both of us to decide if we’re a good fit. If you move forward, we’ll explain our fee arrangement, provide a written engagement agreement, and discuss the retainer.

What if my situation is urgent?

If you’ve been served with court papers, have a hearing scheduled, or have concerns about your safety or your children’s safety, tell us when you call. We’ll do our best to schedule you promptly. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911.

Should I talk to my spouse or co-parent before the consultation?

It’s generally best to speak with an attorney before making agreements, signing documents, or discussing settlement terms. We can help you understand your rights before those conversations happen.
